Nudges are contextual, non-intrusive prompts that guide users toward productive behaviors or inform them of relevant opportunities. Unlike notifications that demand attention, nudges are gentle suggestions that users can acknowledge or dismiss without breaking their flow. They're particularly effective for feature discovery, usage optimization, and re-engagement.

Variants

  • Inline nudge A subtle message embedded within the content flow, appearing near the relevant context without overlaying other elements.
  • Toast nudge A temporary notification that slides in from the edge of the screen, auto-dismissing after a set duration.
  • Banner nudge A persistent or semi-persistent bar at the top or bottom of the interface, used for important but non-blocking information.

Use Cases

  • Encouraging users to try underutilized AI features
  • Reminding users of expiring credits or available upgrades
  • Suggesting prompt improvements based on user behavior
  • Highlighting new features or capabilities after updates
  • Providing contextual tips during complex workflows

Best Practices

  • Limit nudge frequency to avoid notification fatigue — one at a time, with cooldown periods.
  • Make nudges dismissible and remember dismissal preferences.
  • Tie nudges to user context so they feel relevant, not random.
  • Use progressive disclosure: start with the nudge, offer 'Learn more' for details.
  • Distinguish nudge types visually — tips, reminders, and suggestions should look different.
